time, that we were going to be without
health insurance soon, so she went out and
found a job at a collection agency, " he said.
" She figured it would be a short-term solution,
but she wound up succeeding in that
role and loving the industry. "
Soon after, Baich entered the ARM
industry through a sales position at a
California-based company, and it wasn't
long before the husband-and-wife team,
each working at different collection agencies,
looked at each other and thought:
" We can do this by ourselves. " Together
they launched Day Knight & Associates.
Baich found there was a lot of overlap
between the retail and collection worlds,
and his previous experience was the perfect
foundation for his new career.
" They are both sales jobs, " Baich noted.
" In retail you're starting the transaction and
in collections you're completing the transaction.
In retail you're convincing someone
to buy and in collections you're convincing
someone to pay. "
Day Knight & Associates launched in
City, a discount department store chain in
Independence, Ohio. He liked that job-
and that company-so much he made it a
career, climbing the ladder over the next 20
years until he was responsible for 65 stores
in over 12 states. In 1994, he partnered
with an investment group and purchased a
chain of 13 retail footwear stores.
Baich said his business partners were
incredible mentors.
" I was in my early 30s and they were very
successful family business owners in their
late 70s and early 80s, so they were like
father figures to me, " he said. " They taught
me so much about making thoughtful,
careful investments in your business, and to
plan for the unexpected. "
Baich and his partners sold the company
in 2001, and Baich started looking for
another opportunity outside of the industry
he'd worked in since he was 16.
" While we were winding down the
business, I told my wife Denise, who was
staying home with our three kids at the
2002 from the couple's basement. The company's
name was inspired by Denise's alias,
Denise Day, at her previous firm.
" We had a great business plan: no
clients, " Baich joked. " We opened with a
legal pad, a fax machine and a cellphone. I
started knocking on the doors of every
local business that would see me. It took us
over a year to get our first 1,000 consumers
into our database. "
By the two-year mark, the company
was leasing office space and had its first
employee. Its first big account was with a
local lawncare company- " I still have their
business card hanging in my office, " Baich
said-which led to a national opportunity
that kickstarted the business.
" You never know what's going to happen
on a sales call, " Baich said. " That was
when I realized, 'Oh, I can really do this.' "
Today Day Knight & Associates is
focused primarily on health care and Denise
is the company's president. Baich says it was
her passion for the association that inspired
him to get involved too.
Day in the Life
BAICH GIVES US A PEEK INTO A
TYPICAL WORK DAY.
5 a.m.
I generally wake up without an alarm
around 5 or 5:30. I'll have a cup or
two of lemon tea while I log into the
office and start the batch processes.
After that I'll look at emails and scan
the day's headlines on Twitter.
6 a.m.
I try to go on a two-mile walk around
the neighborhood every day.
7:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
I arrive at the office, set up the
workflow for the day and see what
happened from the previous day's
business.
10:45 a.m.
I try to take a 45-minute break for personal
time and to run some errands.
11:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
I generally skip lunch unless I have an
appointment with a client or colleague.
The rest of the afternoon is tied up
with meetings and other business activities.
As a member of the ACA Board
of Directors, I generally spend about
an hour each day on ACA activities.
6:30 p.m.
I arrive home and unwind from the
day. Often my wife and I will go out to
dinner with family or friends.
10 p.m.
Time to hit the sack!
