SOLUTIONS

BEST PRACTICES FOR DATA SECURITY
Some steps recommended by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to strengthen cloud security practices:
* Establish a baseline for
normal network activity
within your environment.
* Routinely review usercreated email forwarding
rules and alerts, or restrict
forwarding.
* Consider restricting users
from forwarding emails to
accounts outside of your
domain.

* Have a mitigation plan
or procedures in place;
understand when, how and
why to reset passwords
and to revoke session
tokens.
* Focus on awareness
and training. Make
employees aware of the
threats-such as phishing
scams-and how they are
delivered. Additionally,

and behavioral analytics to identify threats
before they can do damage.
Your clients, and even some states
with remote work guidance, likely have
additional data security requirements. For
example, Idaho's remote work data security
requirements include provisions for agency
employees to access the company's secure
origination system from any out-of-office
device through a VPN or other system that
requires passwords or an identification
authentication. And it states that the
company must maintain any updates or
other requirements to keep information and
devices secure.
In the chaos of the first round of
lockdowns, some companies may have had
to ask employees to work on their personal
computers, but by this point everyone should
be on company-supplied devices.
Still, it's important to ensure this is
happening. In a Malwarebytes survey of 200
managers, directors and C-suite executives in
IT and cybersecurity roles at companies across
the U.S., 28% admitted they're using personal
devices for work-related activities more than
their work-issued devices, which might not
be properly secured and could create new

opportunities for cyberattacks. Make sure you
are reminding managers and executives to stick
to the secure devices you have provided.

PEOPLE-BASED SECURITY
The pandemic led to an increase in the
number and sophistication of social
engineering cyberattacks. Microsoft reports
that total attack volume jumped 35% in the
first half of 2020 compared to the second
half of 2019, with credential harvesting,
VPN exploits and malware topping the list
of popular attack techniques.
Your employees are your first and best line
of defense against malicious hackers as well
as inadvertent breaches.
A recent McKinsey & Company report
called out the impact remote work has had
on the " human firewall. " A technological
firewall is software that blocks certain types
of traffic from entering your network, but
a human firewall of employees regularly
trained on data security measures can be
equally effective. For instance, if an employee
receives a suspicious email, before clicking
on a link or sharing information outside
the norm, they would first discuss it with a
colleague sitting nearby.

* Establish blame-free
employee reporting and
ensure that employees
know who to contact when
they see suspicious activity
or when they believe they
have been a victim of a
cyberattack.
