Developing Better Habits
Make a plan to turn your bad habits into good habits, one day at a time.
By Kelli Krueger
id you know that you only need to
do one thing to be better, as a collector,
than you are today? Only one thing!
That one thing is change. Commitment to
making a change is the only thing standing
between you as the collector you are
today and the better collector you can
How do you do that? By developing
To give you a simple example of how
habits impact your success, here are two
different approaches to time management:
* My time management habits cause
me to focus on the right things at the
right time because I proactively plan
and prepare each week based on my
monthly goals. Because of this, I am not
stressed out at month end.
* My time management habits cause me
to run around like a chicken with my
head cut off and scramble to reach my
goal on the last day of the month. The
last week of the month is very stressful
and taxing, resulting in me calling out
at least once a month.
Why are good habits important?
* Successful habits foster success
* Bad habits foster problems.
* Your habits define your character
(making good habits even more
* Your habits determine your
* If you want change in your life,
start by changing your habits.
What are the most important habits you
need to be successful as a collector? Make a
list or use the one here and then rank your
effectiveness in each of the necessary habits.
Ask your supervisor to do the same ranking
for you, which will show where the gaps are
and where you need to focus your time.

Changing your behavior by replacing
your bad habits with positive habits can
make you more successful. Unless, of
course, you are already successful enough.
If that's the case, stop reading right now ...
you don't need any more success coming
your way (said no one ever).
I'm sure you've heard the saying, "If
you keep doing what you've been doing,
you'll keep getting what you've been
getting." That does not apply here. If
you keep doing what you are doing,
your skills will become outdated and
irrelevant. You will get left behind.
That's why it's important to start
changing your habits now.
Here are four steps to change a habit:
Write it down. List the benefits of the
change and put it in front of you. This
creates a commitment, and putting it in
your line of sight, such as a note on your
computer or somewhere you walk by every
day, serves as a constant reminder of what
you gain by staying the course.
Keep It Short and Simple (KISS) to help you
stay motivated and make the change
As you work to change bad habits into good
habits, remember this: making a change takes
just a small moment of time, but maintaining
that change takes a lifetime. The return on
the investment in yourself pays back in great
dividends because you are worth the work.

There's an old joke that goes, "How do
you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."
Trying to change all your bad habits
into good habits in one fell swoop is
a surefire way to feel overwhelmed
Focus on changing one bad habit for 30
days. It takes about 21 days to change a
behavior, so take 30 days and make it a
new habit. Be patient and dig your heels
in-30 days will fly by.
