We asked three ACA International award winners to
tell us about leadership lessons learned.

What's one of the most
important lessons you've
learned about being a
good leader?
ROBBIE MALONE, member/
attorney at law, Malone Frost Martin
PLLC. Winner of ACA's 2019 Jonathan
Elliot Judicial Advocacy Award.
"Never ask someone on your team to
do something you aren't willing to do
yourself. For example, I won't ask a
lawyer in my office to stay late to finish
a brief unless I would do the same thing. If I have a legitimate
reason not to do what it is I'm asking, such as a client meeting,
I will share that with my team. I remember when I was a law
clerk, my boss asked me to draft a motion over lunch, and he
went to lunch with a buddy while I worked. He didn't even ask
me if I wanted anything. I never forgot that, and I try to make
sure I don't do that to any member of my team. Following that
simple rule, I have been rewarded with a topflight, stellar team.
Common courtesy goes a long way."

LADONNA BOHLING, IFCCE,

MCE, chief compliance officer,
Receivable Solutions LLC. Winner of
ACA's 2019 Charles F. Lindemann
Certified Instructor of the Year Award.

"The biggest lesson I learned is that
location is key-knowing where to
position yourself. A good leader is not
always in the front blazing the trail, which could overshadow the
team. A good leader recognizes when you need to blaze the trail,
when you need to walk in cadence, side by side with the team, and
when you need to bring up the rear to push and motivate the team."

DAVID KAMINSKI, partner, Carlson
& Messer LLP. Winner of ACA's 2019
ACA International Education Foundation
Fellow Award.
"No leader can have their hand in every
aspect of a business and be effective at
the same time. It's your competent key
performers who can tell you what's working
and what's not. It's so helpful to sit down with your team, ask
questions, listen to their answers, and then assess their input to figure
out the next steps. If you disagree, that's fine, but tell your team
members 'why' so they can understand. If you don't get satisfactory
answers, then you may learn, for the first time, the reason why
something in your company is not working. Asking questions instead
of dictating orders gives your team members a voice and makes them
feel valued and engenders goodwill. This ultimately makes you a
better leader and will make your company function more efficiently
because your team will trust and respect you more."
