CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Reflections on the Shutdown
We know how much we benefit consumers and the U.S. financial ecosystem,
but lately we've had to shout it louder than ever.
By Mark Neeb
y the time you read this, I hope we are on a solid path to whatever the new normal is
going to look like. Workers working from home on a regular basis? Workers reporting
to the office and having to go through a battery of tests just to get in the door? Social
distancing within the workplace? Strategies that don't even exist yet? We've been tested like
never before in the past few months, as members and as an association. Yet here we are, stronger
than ever. Why? Because we stuck together and didn't for a second consider defeat.
In unprecedented fashion, members of state and federal government as well as the media have
hammered us with false narratives and proposed laws that would have done consumers more
harm than good. And what did we do? We
fought back, stood our ground and turned back
a lot of it. Why? Because that's what we do.
That's what we've always done and we always
will. It's not easy being the convenient, financial
services scapegoat. We know how much we
benefit consumers, our creditors' bottom lines
and the financial ecosystem of America.
But defending ourselves doesn't come
without a cost. You've participated in the
Industry Advancement Program for several
years now, and the return on investment
continues to impress. Fighting back lawsuits
and bringing one of our own once in a while
has worked. The victories have been cited in
thousands of other cases and will continue to be part of the conversation. We've seen firsthand
how expensive temporarily being out of business can really be, which makes the IAP seem like a
huge bargain. Thanks for having the foresight to continue funding this effort. It matters!
We also must continue our work in the state legislatures and on Capitol Hill, educating our
elected officials and helping them realize the value we provide to so many different stakeholders.
And that, my friends, takes resources too-resources that are not as abundant as we need them to
be. Time, talent and treasure are all needed to keep us on a path of continued success so when you
have the opportunity to help, please do so. And don't forget, "Together, we've got this!"
"We've been tested
like never before in the
past few months, as
members and as an
association. Yet here we
are, stronger than ever."
