EDUCATIONSPOTLIGHT

Meet Your Certified Instructor
Why did you decide to become a
Certified Instructor?
It was 1999 and ACA's quality management
certification program was just starting to
evolve. I think what intrigued me about
getting more involved in the association
was that program, because it was a new
way to look at the whole of your company,
not just one aspect of it. I loved that it
helped you look under the hood and find
opportunities to make your business more
efficient and compliant. ACA needed
instructors to go out and kick off the
program, and I was recruited to help with
that. I loved it, and that inspired me to
become a Certified Instructor. Eventually I
got involved with ACA's Education Council
and served on and chaired that committee
for many years. I can't imagine not being
a part of the association's education for
the rest of my life. It's just been a great
opportunity to share experiences and learn
from other people in the industry.

What class do you most
enjoy teaching?
One that I love, and actually helped create
with two other people, is the Managing the
Collection Floor class. The
way it's taught is that
the presenter talks
about essential

aspects of the collection floor but then
everyone in the class discusses their own best
practices or the improvements and changes
they've made over the years. It's great
because you can go to that class over and
over again and learn new things every time.

What's something you'd like people
to know about ACA's education
opportunities?
I always encourage people to keep checking
back with ACA's education offerings
because the materials and classes are
updated all the time. ACA always has new
products coming out and is constantly
exploring new delivery methods. For
example, with ACA's new on-demand
seminars, if there have been classes that you
just couldn't go to or fit into your schedule,
now you can download them and go to class
at a time that works best for you.

I like to be a part of, and I know that's
something that people enjoy participating
in. Those classes allow instructors to be
students while they are instructing so we all
get to learn from each other.

Do you have any funny stories from
your teaching career?
Absolutely. One that immediately comes
to mind was my first experience with a
lavalier, those microphones that clip onto
your shirt. We were teaching a huge class,
probably 75 students, and we had to use
microphones so everyone in the room could
hear us. I came back from a bathroom
break and my co-instructor's face had this
look of horror. She whispered to me: "Your
lavalier is still on. We heard everything."

Oh, no!
Oh, yes. I will never forget it.

When have you learned something
from a class that you were
teaching?
All the time. My favorite classes are those
that encourage the instructor to say: "OK,
everyone, here's the concept. Now, what
are you doing?" Getting an opportunity to
share best practices like that is invaluable.
Everyone, even the instructor, takes home so
many new ideas. That's the style of learning
