Meet Your Certified Instructor
Why is professional
development important?

How do your CI skills translate
to your job?

For me personally, I think that it's important
to continue to develop professionally because
if you don't you stagnate and risk burnout. Of
course, as much as you learn, there's always
more to know. I appreciate opportunities
to keep growing. I think that pursuing
professional development has helped me
take pride in the career path I've chosen. It's
helped me gain confidence, plus it's opened
me up to valuable networking opportunities.
I feel fortunate to have the career that
I have. I'm passionate about sharing that
knowledge and experience with others so they
can have the same opportunities I've had in
this industry.

I definitely use what I've learned through
being a Certified Instructor in my day-to-day
role at CollectionCenter. It was very helpful
when my job was more focused on collector
training. It's also useful in my current role
as vice president of marketing because I do a
lot of client training. I do one-on-one client
sessions where I go into their facilities and
work with their staff on internal pain points.
We also conduct seminars for clients several
times a year to teach them more about the
in-house collection process.

When you teach ACA classes, what
are some questions you often hear?
Usually attendees just want clarity on some of
the issues that are hot topics in our industry,
which I hope are addressed in the CFPB's
final rules. I feel like the manner in which I
present the information and the fact that I try
to give a lot of real-life examples-some of my
own or some I've learned from other agencies
or court cases I've reviewed-makes it easier
for attendees to relate to the material.
I'm fortunate to have had [ACA Past
President and former CollectionCenter
owner] Linda Russell as my mentor for

many years. She is the best instructor
I've ever encountered. I definitely had an
advantage with so much exposure to Linda
and her training style, and I've been able to
incorporate techniques I've learned from her
over the years.

What's your favorite ACA class
to teach?
Hands down, any class related to the FDCPA.
I've had the opportunity to teach Advanced
FDCPA Topics several times and I enjoy the
questions and conversations that session
elicits. I could talk about the FDCPA all
day, every day. Part of what makes it so
interesting to me is being able to see the
application of the law and apply that to
our day-to-day work. Doing so has helped
prevent violations and even educate our
clients on how proper disclosures can aid
in the compliance and collection process. I
also have a soft spot for this topic because
Linda Russell was instrumental in getting
the FDCPA enacted. It was so intriguing to
me to hear her stories about testifying before
Congress. Because of her involvement and
her mentorship, it became a topic that I'm
passionate about.
