ORIGINSTORY

Looking Forward to Monday Morning
Mike Hiller keeps many irons in the fire and is always learning in his career at American Profit Recovery.

F

or Mike Hiller, a career in
the accounts receivable
management industry is
about opportunity. What you do for
a living is something you should
look forward to every day, a value
Hiller said he learned at a young age
growing up in northern Michigan.
Here's how he got his start in the
industry, in his own words:

"At age 16, I climbed
Mount Washington with
my Uncle Gary. It was
exhilarating. You get to
the peak and after about
60 seconds of taking
in the view, you ask
yourself, 'What's next?'"

"I was very fortunate at a young age to have
the aptitude for and to have learned skilled
trades. I grew up in Manistee, Michigan,
where my younger brother and I cut, split
and stacked wood to use as our source of
heat in the winter. Perhaps the most salient
thing about my childhood was working on
my Grandma Jane's farm.
It was a good childhood. Our parents
worked long, hard hours and my brother
and I never went without.
Learning was always intuitive, so when
I was offered an academic scholarship
at Central Michigan University, that was
the obvious choice. I earned a bachelor's
degree in psychology and minored in
business and philosophy.
My college years were spent designing
and installing roof systems for homes
built at the turn of the century. It was this
'know-how' that helped me pay my way
through college. To this day I feel most
comfortable in boots and jeans, tinkering
and creating.
I enrolled in graduate school at the
University of Detroit-Mercy to study
industrial organizational psychology.
Truth be told, in addition to following
my passion to learn about psychology,
my decision to apply to that school had
everything to do with a girl: my nowwife Jen.
When I started paying graduate school
tuition, I knew I needed to keep earning.
I browsed the help-wanted ads in the
newspaper and one of the positions I

applied for was with American Profit
Recovery. I worked as a collector for a
little over a year and was promoted to a
collection manager position.
In 2012, I was promoted to vice
president of collections, which is the
position I hold today. I focus on strategy,
analytics and challenging the process.
When I think about why I stayed in the
industry, it's because of the opportunities
I've had at American Profit Recovery.
At age 16, I climbed Mount Washington
with my Uncle Gary. It was exhilarating.
You get to the peak and after about 60
seconds of taking in the view, you ask
yourself, 'What's next?'
Earning your way in an organization
and being worth your salt is like that.
You've proven something to everyone else
but more importantly, you've proven it to
yourself. You set a goal to march to the
top and through years of hard work and
dedication, you get there.
I always make it a point to have many
irons in the fire. I love work. I look
forward to Monday mornings just as much
as I do Saturday mornings spent with
my family.
Jen and I have two great kids now and
have been married 12 years.
What's next?
Industries like ours need key personnel
in operations positions. The knowledge,
skills and abilities I've worked to develop
are part of my plan to continue a path to
leadership at American Profit Recovery.
What I see next is chief operations officer.
I was also recently selected to serve a
four-year term on Michigan's Collection
Practices Board.
Outside of work, I'm always ready for
an adventure. I carry three things in my
wallet: photos of my family; a fishing
license for U.S. and Canadian waters; and a
'blank check.'"
