join competitions and monitor their steps.
"The work is done for you," she said.
Capio Partners runs voluntary group
and individual contests and gives prizes
to top achievers. In the program's first
year, employees took close to 122 million
steps for a total of 54,229 miles. DeHoyos
estimated about 60% of the company's
employees take part.
The winning team members get a prize
that, crucially, is something they actually
want. For instance, recent contest winners
each received a $200 Visa gift card.
Employees walk together on breaks,
which can give them opportunities to talk to
coworkers they might not know very well,
including members of the executive team.
"In the collection industry, you sit at a
desk a lot, especially collectors who are
expected to make so many phone calls each
day," deHoyos said. "Personally, for me
and in speaking with other employees who
are participating, you think you've walked
a lot during the day but when you have
something on your wrist that says you've

only taken 200 steps-and your goal is
10,000-well, it's an eye opener."
DeHoyos walks two miles every day with
her team during breaks and has found it to
be a great destresser.
"When we're walking, we can talk about
issues we're having or even just get some
help solving a problem," she said.
Fitness reimbursements are another
common way to encourage healthy lifestyles.
For example, Resume Genius reimburses
employees for half of their wellness
expenses, up to a maximum of $35 a month.
"We have a pretty broad definition of
wellness too," said Sam Johns, HR specialist
at Resume Genius. "Gym subscriptions,
yoga classes, rock climbing and even
massages are covered. All the employee
needs to do is submit the invoice with our
company's tax number on it, and they'll
be reimbursed."
In some cases, just starting the wellness
conversation at your company can boost
employee morale, but keep in mind once
you start down this path you ultimately

team. What that looks like is up to you and
your employees.
