Lead the Next Generation
Through Mentorship
Embrace opportunities to give career advice to rising stars.

T

he accounts receivable management
industry is often characterized by
its high-stress work environments.
With all the changes included in the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's
proposed debt collection rule, this stress level
will likely increase as companies adapt to the
coming changes. Senior executives can help
junior members manage stress and build
their careers through mentorship.

WHAT DOES MENTORSHIP
LOOK LIKE?
While mentorship may be time consuming,
it's incredibly valuable. It requires you to
have senior staff who are not only willing to
offer advice to less experienced employees,
but who are also willing to go one step
further by taking them under their wings.

Mentors generously take time out of
their busy schedules to offer guidance and
advice to mentees on how they can be more
successful-in both their personal and
professional lives.

HOW DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE
NEEDS MENTORING?
People will rarely come right out and ask
you to be their mentor. Take the initiative
by identifying and supporting junior people
who could add value to your organization.
Think about what it was like when you were
in their shoes. Remember what other people
did to guide your journey. It's now your job
to help junior staff members climb to the
next level.
ARM industry executives, especially those
working in small to midsized businesses, are

already fully engaged in servicing clients and
building their companies. Who has time to
mentor junior colleagues? It may be difficult,
but you have to carve out time to have oneon-ones with your mentee. This will help you
build stronger staff in the long run.

SHOULD MENTORSHIP BE AN
ORGANIC OR PLANNED PROCESS?
The short answer is: both. Company outings
and other planned types of team building
help enhance your overall company culture.
Helping a staff member who is in need
of career guidance, though, should occur as
situations or questions arise. Approach that
person directly and say, "I want to help you
succeed in our company and in your life."
The nature of your help will vary. It could
be help interfacing with clients, assisting
