Financial Education

C

ommunity outreach takes many forms. ACA International's
80-year history is anchored by its commitment not only
to volunteerism and charitable donations, but also to
educating consumers on the fundamentals of money management.
The association's financial education efforts date back to as early
as 1967, when the association launched the national Pay Your Bills
Week campaign to inform the public of their obligations when
using credit.
ACA later released the "Buying, Budgeting and Borrowing" series
of videotapes aimed at educating high school students.
To build on the association's financial literacy efforts, ACA
embraced the national program Business Week in 1980, which
was designed to connect high school and college students with
business professionals so they could learn about the private
enterprise system.
ACA's financial education efforts evolved over time, enhanced by
the development of the Loomer-Mortenson Scholarship Program
and Collectors Challenge to raise money for higher-education

scholarships awarded to industry professionals and their children,
coinciding with Financial Literacy Month in April.
ACA members' fundraising and education efforts benefit their
communities tremendously. Third-party debt collection agencies
made an estimated $17.7 million in charitable contributions in
2016 and industry employees spent an estimated 521,700 hours
volunteering for causes/activities of their choosing, including nearly
151,300 hours at company-sponsored volunteer activities.
Understanding that educating consumers of all ages benefits our
credit-based economy and helps those with debts understand how
to manage their accounts, ACA members often lead classes or speak
at local schools and organizations. For example, members of the
Missouri Collectors Association volunteer to teach financial literacy
curriculum at Marquette High School in Chesterfield, Missouri.
ACA even uses its communication vehicles to educate consumers.
For example, the association's podcast, ACA Cast, helps foster
discussions about why it's important for consumers to communicate
with debt collectors.
