Gulf States Collectors Association
Takes Mississippi

I
...SEND CLIENTS
FLOWERS
I tell our clients that if they
call us and leave a message
during normal business
hours, and that call is not
returned the same day, we will
overnight them flowers or a
box of candy. When I started
in this business 30 years ago,
the number one complaint I
heard from creditors was that
their collection agencies took
forever to call them back. I
realized we had an opportunity
to differentiate ourselves. I also
tell clients that when they call,
our phones will be picked up by
a live person within two rings.
They sometimes laugh a little
at these promises-they think
it's cute and maybe a little
corny-but I think that human
touch is so critical in today's
world. It's rare that I have to
actually send flowers, maybe
two or three times a year (and
it's usually my fault, not my
staff's), but clients are always
delighted. In an industry where
we all must comply with the
same rules and use the same
letters and scripts, it's your
customer service skills that
make the difference.

president of Coast to Coast

ndustry leaders in Tupelo, Mississippi, who attended the Gulf States Collectors
Association annual meeting April 14-16 didn't leave the birthplace of Elvis Presley
without meeting the best Elvis short of the real thing while learning the latest in
industry education.
The three-day event featured remarks from ACA International President Jack Brown
III, president of Gulf Coast Collection Bureau in Sarasota, Florida, as well as a panel
discussion on the future of the accounts
receivable management industry in next
three to five years as seen by industry
leaders from the software, education,
compliance, legal, letters, payment and
artificial intelligence areas.
Attendees also had access to core
ACA International education seminars
and sessions on linguistics and cyber
tracking, among other topics. Visit

ACA's upcoming unit conferences and
educational seminars.

CA International members Kevin Baich, vice president of Day Knight & Associates,
and Dennis Barton, managing attorney of The Barton Law Group LLC, met with
State Sen. Brian Williams, D-University City, in April.
The group discussed the relationship
between consumers and businesses in
Missouri, Baich said.
Face-to-face meetings with state
legislators and members of Congress can
go a long way in building relationships
and providing valuable insights about
issues relevant to the accounts receivable
management industry.
