Meet Your Certified Instructor
Why did you decide to become
a Certified Instructor?
Years ago, Terri Boettcher and I volunteered
to help rework ACA's Healthcare Collection
Management training. I was already teaching
for ACA as a subject matter expert, and
I'd done seminars for our clients for years.
But because I wasn't a Certified Instructor,
I couldn't teach the Healthcare Collection
Management class when it was finished
without a Certified Instructor present. I was
so involved in creating it, I wanted to teach it
alone too. So I went through the training and
it was so much fun.

What's unique about your
teaching style?
I'd say two things: I have a thick New
York accent and I find humor in basically
everything. I've learned over the years to
talk slower to get rid of that "in a New York
minute" attitude so people can understand
me better, but I can't shake the humor.
Actually, I've found it's a great teaching
tool. Compliance information isn't always
exciting, so it's helpful to find humor and
tell appropriate stories that have to do

with the topic you're teaching. I have a lot
of experience in this industry and a lot of
stories to tell. You don't need me to read to
you; you can do that on your own. But you
can't get my perspective and experiences
unless I give them to you. My goal in
teaching is to share so attendees can learn
from me.

Do you prefer to teach online
or face-to-face?
A face-to-face course and an online course
are very different from each other. I love
the peer involvement of face-to-face
classes. There's nothing like a good group
discussion. People in the group know your
struggles and they've often done the same
thing you've done. So they usually offer
help, understanding and wonderful ideas
for attendees to try.
Online courses are different but have a
lot of pluses too. They have a specific time
structure, so they're easy to plan your day
around. You still have a lot of interaction.
When I'm teaching, I can display documents
I've prepared or bring up a web site to
illustrate what I'm saying. It's much easier to
do this in an online forum because everyone
is already staring at their screens. I also like
the chat function of an online course. In a
face-to-face class, if there are a lot of people
raising their hands you might not get to
everyone. But when you're online, people type
out their questions so I can just scroll through
the chat box to see if I've missed anyone.

Do you ever learn new information
when you teach?
I can't think of one time I've taught that I
didn't bring back something new to try in
my own office. I remember once my fellow
instructor Beth Conklin mentioned the
feel-felt-found method. I use that all the
time now. It's where you say something
like, "I understand how you feel. I spoke to
someone the other day who felt the same
way. What we've found was..." I'd never
thought of it before she brought it
up. I also learn from attendees. It's
such a plethora of information
when you teach a class. I feel
I've become a much better
instructor because of all the
classes I've taught, and I
appreciate ACA giving me
the opportunity.
