Speaker Q&A

EDUCATIONSPOTLIGHT

T

aking on a compliance role in your organization can feel daunting,
and rightly so-there's a lot going on. New court decisions, evolving
rules and regulations and local lawsuit trends all play a part in building
an effective compliance management system for your company.
Roger Weiss, IFCCE, president and CEO for CACi and incoming ACA
president, co-presented a seminar, "Introduction to Collection Industry
Compliance" at ACA's Spring Forum & Expo Featuring the Campus ACA
Academy. We talked with him about why this overview of compliance
management is so essential for ACA members.
What's it like to present at
Spring Forum?

ACA Awards:
Fellow and Scholar,
Members Attorney Program,
and International Fellowship
of Certified Collection
Executives designations;
Member of the Year Award;
Charles F. Lindemann
Certified Instructor of the
Year Award; Fred Kirschner
Instructor Achievement
Awards; James K. Erickson
Continuous Service
Award

I think the general vibe at Spring Forum is
that people are hungry for new knowledge
and education, and want to know how to
apply it in their office to enhance revenues
and reduce risk. They are excited to be
there among their peers to learn and even
commiserate a little bit. There's a growing
energy that was certainly a carry-over from
last year. The momentum is undoubtedly
rockin'! I think it's an important event for
people of all experience levels because it
really helps them expand their education
and hone their knowledge.

Why is the course you presented
so important?
"Introduction to Collection Industry
Compliance" is a course designed to
help people build a strong compliance
foundation so they're not starting from
scratch every year. What I like about
teaching this class is that you're exposing
people to a compliance management
system who might be coming from
different perspectives. Some may have

had a CMS in place for years but it just
wasn't documented. In that case, the
information in the course can usually
help them tighten it up a bit, and then of
course document their CMS. And then
there may be people who have a good
compliance management system in place
who are able to glean a few essential
takeaways to make it even better.

As a presenter, what was your
overarching goal?
The one thing I told the audience is that I
wanted everyone to walk away with some
piece of information that pays for their trip.
People who are new to the industry, who
maybe didn't have any expectations for the
session, walked out with a very potent and
powerful to-do list. For people who are
experienced but not compliance-minded, it
brought the essentials into focus. And for
people who are compliance veterans, I think
it helped them sharpen and hone what they
are looking to build into their compliance
management system.
