UNDERSTANDING THE DEBT
Although there are common threads, not all
student loans are the same.
Federal loans, guaranteed and serviced
by the U.S. Department of Education and
its contractors, offer a series of repayment
options to borrowers, including straight-line
monthly payments and graduated payments.
With varied interest rates, federal loans also
offer appealing benefits, such as payment
deferment if borrowers return to school
for advanced degrees, serve in the military
or work in certain careers. Borrowers can
also request forbearance if they are having
financial problems or other issues, but the
interest will continue to accrue for these
periods, lasting up to three years.
