pring is here and that means only one thing: the lead-up to ACA International's
Annual Convention & Expo has begun! In the coming months, a number of
ACA state units will hold their annual meetings, and of course there is ACA
International's 2018 Washington Insights Conference in May.
We tend to look at these events as being planned and run by someone else while viewing
ourselves as just bystanders, but nothing could be further from the truth. These events occur,
and succeed, because of you and your efforts.
Whether you are an ACA member, a director or officer of a state unit, or a contributor at
the national level, you are an equal participant in your association. Your attendance at these
events is crucial.
Your fellow ACA members derive more impact from ACA events when more people
participate. You get a better grasp of our industry when more people participate. Your leaders
get a greater understanding of your needs when more people participate.
ACA's 2018 Annual Convention & Expo, which will be held this year in Nashville July 23-25,
may be the most significant industry event in recent memory. We will welcome a new CEO,
Mark Neeb, to his first convention in his new role and install a bright, young leader, Jack Brown
III of Gulf Coast Collection Bureau Inc., as our new president.
But most importantly, we gather together to tackle the industry's most pressing problems
and develop solutions for creative methods to boost our companies and our clients. (We also
may indulge in a drink or two, socialize with colleagues we have not seen in a while and take
advantage of the many entertainment options the Music City has to offer.)
The political climate is as favorable as it has ever been for the industry and we must use
that hope and optimism to build upon our successes. The roadmap will be further developed
in Nashville based upon the dialogue that takes place there. You need to be at ACA's Annual
Convention in order to make sure your association is what you want it to be, and you get from
it what you expected when you became a member.
To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, your association is by its members, for its members
and of its members. It is only as strong as you make it. It does not belong to a select few, or
act on behalf of a small group; it is working for you. However, it cannot do so if you do not
participate. Read up on what to expect at ACA's Annual Convention on p. 16, and then make
plans to join your industry friends in Nashville this July. Remember, it's your association.
