Q&A

Carletta Clyatt, senior vice president
of The Omnia Group, tells Collector
magazine the best way to manage
a team with a wide range of
behaviors.

Managing Personalities
Q: Are people's behavioral traits
completely hardwired or can they
be changed?

"Some behavioral traits are
hardwired in the sense that we are
born with natural aptitudes and we
gravitate toward tasks within those
aptitudes. However, simply because
we have a propensity for a certain
trait does not mean we cannot step
outside our comfort zone or adapt to
do things that do not come naturally;
that's the beauty of being human.
For example, you may not be naturally
detail-oriented, but that doesn't mean
you can't produce quality work-you
may just have to work a little harder,
remove distractions or implement
processes that help get the work done.
One note: When you are forced to
spend the majority of your day on
tasks that do not suit your natural
traits, you tend to burn out or feel
dissatisfaction with your job, leading
to a host of problems for the employee
and manager."

Q: How can leaders manage a team
of diverse personalities without
feeling pulled in multiple directions?

"The bigger the team, the more a leader
will be pulled in multiple directions-
it's part of the gig. But through selfawareness and awareness of each
team member's needs, the leader has
a 'cheat sheet' on how to manage that
diversity smoothly.
It can feel overwhelming to leaders only
because they have to guess or figure out
each team member's preferences over
time. When they conduct a behavioral
assessment, the leader gets a road map
for how to manage each person-a guide
for managing the varying strengths,
challenges and motivational needs of
each employee.
While it might sound like more work,
managing to the individual rather than
the group is actually more efficient
and effective. Leaders are pulled less,
not more, because each person is
getting what they need, when they
need it."
