Motivation and encouragement to help start your year with a bang.

he January issue of Collector magazine is one of my favorites to put together. To get a
sense of what ACA International members can expect in the next 12 months, our team
talks with more than a dozen industry experts about the changes they see ahead for the
credit and collection industry. These conversations are fascinating, filled with optimism and
excitement as well as a natural wariness that comes from years of operating under unclear and
conflicting rules and regulations.
While we heard a lot of the same questions facing us a year ago-the biggest being: when will
the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's proposed rules for the debt collection industry
come out?-we also got some valuable insight on newer issues, like upheaval in the student loan
industry and recent call blocking and labeling frustrations. Check out some of the hot topics on
the horizon in the article "Next Level" on page 18.
For this issue, we also checked in with ACA members to hear about their personal goals
for the new year (page 24). Some were funny, some were helpful, one was particularly
heartbreaking, but they all contained a
nugget of inspiration that I used to help craft
my own New Year's resolutions. (I might be
rooting for the Sox now?)
As part of this feature, we shone a spotlight
on a few of our favorite management books to
help spark some new ideas. I got to read a lot of
great books to prepare for this and narrowing
it down to four was hard! One that I loved but
didn't make it into the feature due to space
restrictions was Tom Rath's Fully Charged? The
3 Keys to Energizing Your Work and Life.
In it, Rath brings up a practical approach
to engagement and personal fulfillment,
including: why you should give staff a sense
of purpose, why it's in your best interest to turn negative situations into positive ones and
why the most effective professional negotiators rely on questions to resolve tense situations.
It's not specifically directed at the collection industry, but it's a great overview of some
universal principles we can all benefit from.
That's our goal with this January issue: to give you a high-level view of what's ahead in the
industry and inspire you to think creatively and make positive changes. I invite you to let me
