Training Advice
We asked two ACA International
award winners for insights on
how to help employees excel.

Your Training
is Getting Stale.
What Can You Do
to Give it a Boost?

"There are several
strategies your
company's training
department can use to
improve training
curriculum and
participant engagement.
First, make sure your objectives are
clear, concise, timely and actionable.
An objective must be stated clearly and
describe what the learner must be able to
do at the end of the specified unit, lesson,
course, or program and the conditions
under which the learner must do it. Most
importantly, frame objectives based on
the perspective of the learner.
Second, the curriculum must include
the ability for the participant to learn a
new skill, knowledge or concept they can
immediately apply and transfer to on the
job. The curriculum should include all three
styles, including audio, visual and kinesthetic
learning. Include a balance of lecture,
individual exercises and group activities to
reinforce learning objectives.
Finally, at the end of each training
session, feedback is important.
Think about incorporating surveys
or questionnaires to understand the
participant's reactions to the content,
facilitator and learning environment."

"In an average-sized
agency, training
initiatives can be quite a
drain on staffing. The
trainer wears many hats
and the need to train
new entrants sometimes
is eclipsed by important daily tasks assigned
to the trainer/supervisor/collector/owner.
It's important to update your training
outlines and content at least annually.
As educators, we also have to be cognizant
that individuals learn differently. Some
can listen and comprehend, some need to
read, while others are more tactile and need
to be hands on. Often it is the method of
delivery that hampers learning, while other
times it is a disjointed approach with many
interruptions and a lack of fluency.
Make training a crucial part of your
organization and be sure that those
delivering this vital information are afforded
the time to get the job done effectively!"
