What's a Typical Workday
Like for You?
Hansel: My daily responsibilities
are primarily driven by the requests
for support I receive from my colleagues.
The general counsel's role is to protect the
organization's legal and business interests; as
such, much of my daily work is similar to the
work of in-house counsel serving a for-profit
business enterprise.
One day's work is never the same as
the next. I spend varying amounts of time
reviewing and drafting contracts and corporate
policy; addressing internal corporate policy
and legal compliance questions; supporting
the human resources function; administering
the ACA Ethics Program; supporting ACA
governance; conducting content review risk
assessments and managing ACA's intellectual
property rights.
Yes, work often follows me home (who
can avoid it?), but my contributions in
support of ACA's mission and values are
respected and the time spent is rewarding.

How Does Your Role
Impact ACA Members?
Hansel: Consider me an understated
ACA champion. Though most of
my work is done behind-the-scenes, I am
working exclusively and tirelessly for ACA's
collective interests daily. For example, I
review vendor service agreements to ensure
appropriate contractual risk provisions,
which protect the association from avoidable
adverse business and financial impact. In
my legal adviser role, I am proud to support
the ACA team in delivering our best to all
of our members. My personal governing
philosophy at work is: "Make it Happen!"
Whatever I do for an ACA colleague, I do for
the good of the whole.

What's the Most Rewarding
Part of Your Job?
Hansel: I am rewarded by invitations
from colleagues to identify solutions to
their legal and business challenges. I enjoy
empowering others to control their own
optimal outcome. I inquire about business
interests, present options, identify risk and
explore possibilities, rather than mandate
determinations by general counsel's "decree."
As a relative newcomer in the credit
and collection industry, I have been
impressed by the collective wealth and

depth of experience and acumen ACA
members possess. A palpable strength in
numbers, power in knowledge and fortitude
in zealous advocacy supports the ACA
mission I am proud to protect.

What's the Most Challenging
Part of Your Job?
Hansel: There will always be more
projects to advance than there is time
available. Overcoming this ever-present
challenge requires me to keep the lines of
communication open to and from my office.
Communication must be timely, and it
must be authentic. Devoting the legal team's
resources judiciously requires an accurate
ongoing assessment of the organization's
priorities and risk tolerance.

What's Been a Highlight
From Your Time at ACA?
Hansel: My ACA colleagues have
shared their appreciation for my sense
of urgency in responsiveness, my willingness
to listen and my honesty in communication.
Those seemingly small moments are
cherished professional highlights every
single time.

KAREN SCHEIBE ELIASON

Corporate Counsel
Though she comes from a family of doctors and hospital executives,
Corporate Counsel Karen Scheibe Eliason always knew that being
a lawyer would be her life's work. Scheibe Eliason studied political
science and philosophy at Minnesota State University. Immediately
after obtaining her undergraduate degree, she pursued a law degree
from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minn., focusing on litigation and
alternative dispute resolution.
Scheibe Eliason worked for more than a decade as a senior litigation associate at one of the
nation's preeminent law firms, where she prosecuted and defended hundreds of cases each
year in numerous federal bankruptcy and district courts, as well as the U.S. Courts of Appeal.
She served as a bankruptcy and creditors' rights partner at LeClair Ryan in Alexandria, Va.,
before joining ACA's team in Minneapolis in 2013.

What's a Typical Workday
Like for You?
Scheibe Eliason: My day always starts
with reviewing recent court decisions
around the country involving credit and
collection industry litigation topics and
reading several specialized legal periodicals
on cutting-edge aspects of various areas
of law that may have an impact on ACA's
members. Depending on the nature of the
court decision and the need for messaging
to ACA's membership, I will brainstorm
with colleagues and draft content for ACA's
publications and website.
I also spend a fair amount of time helping
to determine the litigation advocacy needs
of the association. On an ongoing basis, I
monitor cases ACA supports through the
Industry Advancement Program, as well

as research other cases for potential future
IAP support. If a federal district court
somewhere issues a decision that could have
a potentially precedent-setting impact on
industry-wide concerns, as ACA's Judicial
Committee Liaison I will recommend to the
Judicial Committee that it consider the case
for support. Nearly all of the cases in which
ACA has provided amicus support have been
cases I've identified and recommended to
the Judicial Committee as having potentially
precedent-setting impact on significant
industry-wide concerns.
In addition, I also prepare relevant
materials and summary reports for the
Judicial Committee so that it may consider
applications we receive from members
requesting IAP support for litigation matters.
This year we've had a tremendous increase
