ACANEWS

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich praised President Trump's ability to connect with people.

O'Rielly received generous applause as
he addressed some of the critical regulatory
issues that create costly problems for
ACA members. To stress the out-oftouch interpretations of the 2015 TCPA
Declaratory Ruling and Order, O'Rielly
displayed a vintage rotary dial phone and
said, "Here is one of the only devices the
previous commission wanted your industry
to use to make calls in the 21st century-a
rotary phone. Yet even if callers had the
option to manually dial, it is ridiculous to
expect that they would dial hundreds or
thousands of numbers by hand."
The commissioner's remarks were
presented to a record gathering of ACA
members who joined the association's
professional government affairs team for
congressional meetings and informative
speeches delivered by notable figures,
including former House Speaker Newt
Gingrich. As a lunchtime keynoter,
Gingrich's presentation was filled with
interesting insights about his career
in Washington and some of his most
noteworthy experiences.
A prolific author and political
commentator, Gingrich touched on his
friendship with Trump, noting that much of

the president's success is related to his ability
to connect with people and his "enormous
personal skills on TV."
Echoing other speakers who took the
podium, Gingrich agreed that having the
ability to "explain your side of an issue" is the
key to passing laws in Washington.
ACA promotes its annual Washington
Insights Conference as an opportunity for
members to engage with lawmakers about the
impact that policies and regulations approved
in Washington have on working people and
business owners across the country.

Washington insiders like Travis Norton,
policy advisor and counsel with Brownstein
Hyatt Farber Schreck, praised ACA
members for visiting Washington, saying,
"There is really nothing more powerful in
this town than sharing your personal story."
Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who helped
kick off the ACA event, made a similar
comment about the value of government
officials consulting with industry
professionals when considering laws that
impact a given sector.
Meanwhile, several members of the
House Financial Services Committee met
with Washington Insights Conference
attendees after debating the merits of the
Financial CHOICE Act, which contains
language to reform the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau including a provision
to restructure the bureau's leadership. The
U.S. House of Representatives passed the
Financial CHOICE Act, H.R. 10, by a 233186 party line vote on June 8.
Committee members who spoke to
Washington Insights Conference participants
about the Financial CHOICE Act, among
other topics, included U.S. Reps. Brad
Sherman, D-Calif.; Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y.; Roger
Williams, R-Texas; Scott Tipton, R-Colo.;
and Ann Wagner, R-Mo.
"When I voted today to pass the
Financial CHOICE Act out of committee,
I kept the needs of our families and small
businesses in mind," Wagner said before
the committee's vote in May. "Americans
