CALL ON PEOPLE RANDOMLY
AROUND THE TABLE
Managers often ask for input at team
meetings by going around the table, seat by
seat. The better method is for the manager
to bounce around randomly, which keeps
everyone alert because they don't know
when they will be called on. The result is
that people learn to speak up proactively
rather than wait to be called on.
Don't fall into the habit of calling on certain
people first; mix it up so each team member
gets roughly equal time in the spotlight.
Remember: sometimes the best ideas reside
in the minds of less verbally assertive people,
so it's important for managers to involve
everyone at every team meeting.

KEEP A SEATING CHART
Put a checkmark by a person's name
when they make a contribution to the
conversation. When a person has spoken
twice and others have not spoken at all,
call on the non-speakers. This prevents
the dominant talkers from controlling the
meeting and intimidating less-confident
team members. It also puts the shy
people on notice that they are expected to
participate.

STAY POSITIVE
Make follow-up action items part of the
agenda format. This ensures that there is a
record of what remains to be done and who
is on point. At the next team meeting, all

the action items should be revisited, with
updates on progress.
Always end your meetings with your
own version of, "Thanks all for your good
thoughts." You and every member of your
team should leave the meeting feeling that
it was worthwhile, informative, teambuilding and aligned with the company's
goals and strategies. If that's not the case,
then additional improvements are needed
going forward.
