Raising these issues with clients can be
an excellent lead-in to suggest some best
practices. You could even offer to review
some of their commonly used forms, like
credit applications and admission forms,
to determine if any essential information
is missing.
For example, you might suggest clients
add express consent language. You could
also point out any ambiguities that could
potentially cause issues down the road.
For instance, are clients charging interest,
collection fees or late charges? If so, how are
those fees calculated?
Some of the information your company
shares with clients might not have any
downstream benefits for your agency, but
still is an essential part of your partnership.
Teaching healthcare providers how to
collect payment at the time of service,
for example, doesn't directly benefit a
collection agency, but it does demonstrate
your expertise and casts you as an extension
of their office.
"We've always had a consultative approach
to collections with our clients," Strausser
said. "We try to do what we can to make
their operation more successful. Even if it
reduces business to us, the dollar volume we
do get is cleaner and more compliant."
